Plan views of phases and shading

How to simply differentiate between new and existing using shading and hatches. I want to acheive this

Existing phase shaded grey, new phase shown as hatched layers.

METHOD:- starting with an existing plan showing just existing:

  1. Set up the existing floor plan view. This is default outofthebox settings without altering the Phase Filters, Detail Level set to "Coarse"
  2. Duplicate this (if "new" view not already set up) and move to New or Phase Folder (see previous post about browser organisation).

The existing now shows as unshaded in "coarse" detail level. I have set up a new phase filter "construction" instead of the default "show all" as by default this is greyed out and not changeable. Doing this you can quickly go back to default if you mess up.
Phasing must be set to "New" for the next step.

Add some new walls - notice even with outofthebox wall styles they dont clean up properly! Get round this by right clicking (RC) the wall end dot and "disallow join" - manually drag to meet the outside face. Now the new wall shows as hatched layers to distinguish from existing. What I want is the existing to show up as "coarse" and new to medium with hatched layers.

Several settings to try:
  1. Set in Vis/Graphics Overrides Walls to "By View" Detail Level. This should be the default showing as the view. If the new layer hatch doesnt show go into V/G Overrides and set Walls>Cut>FillPattern Overrides to "Visable"
  2. Get the existing walls to show shaded fill - set Phases (Manage>Phasing) and under "Phase Filters" set existing for the current Filter Name (mine is "construction") to "overrriden". Then in Phases > Graphic Overrides set Cut > Patterns to "Visible" and whatever shade colour and pattern you want.
Thats all there is to it. However note there is distinct hiearchy to which settings and which overrides prevail. So if the new and existing still dont show as expected with the above something else is taking precidence.
  • RC "Override Graphics in View" > "by element" will override these
  • A view template will override all
  • In V/G overrides setting detail level (should be "by view") to coarse shades the lot, medium will look something like the last image, but  mysteriously when I was tying with an existing project to set this up, the "new" hatching took on the grey shading colour setting of the "existing " filter setting.
